One Night Stand was a one day read for me :) I don't exactly remember reading any book this fast and determined for a long time. It was an easy read, it was funny, it was sad at times and there were a few surprises that I did not expect sprinkled here and there. Overall, it was a book that I enjoyed a lot.I've never read anything by Julie Cohen before so I had no idea about her writing style but I did consider this book to be a chick lit before I started it, maybe because it's the cover or the synopsis that seems so predictable. But in the end it turned out to be more than I expected. This was a contemporary romance book, with a few issues that needed to be dealt with by the heroine and the hero. It wasn't too serious a book I guess, but it was serious enough for me to enjoy it fully. I think I like it more when there are problems to deal with for the protagonists, it makes the story more believable for me.Eleanor is a woman who lives alone, works in a pub and secretly writes erotic romance novels under a false name. Considering her second job, she's not much of a sex adventurer herself but she likes to live through her heroines. Her best friend is Hugh whom she knows since college and they've been friends for seven years. Hugh's the only one who knows about her secret identity as an erotica author. Hugh's good with women and he sure is a true adventurer when it comes to sex. Oh, and they share a bedroom wall. Yeah :) Poor Eleanor. Then Eleanor brings home a stranger one night when she gets drunk and extra vulnerable and depressed about herself and has a one night stand and the whole book takes shape from then on. Because Eleanor is pregnant with the stranger's child, and the worst thing is she doesn't remember either him or the details of the night they had. No phone number, no name, no nothing. But Eleanor is determined to find the father of her child because she wants her child to know its father for several reasons which I will not elaborate here for the sake of a spoiler-free review.I liked Eleanor. She was nowhere near a perfect heroine and exactly for that reason she was perfect for this book and this reader. She made mistakes, she confused her true feelings for other things and she pushed when she should've pulled harder. But she was exactly as anyone would've been like in this kind of situation. Not once did she annoy me or made me want to smack her.I loved the whole frienship between Eleanor and Hugh. We got a few flashbacks to the beginning of their friendship which made it easier to understand and sympathize with them.Hugh, for all intents and purposes, was supposed to be the sex loving womanizer best friend, but of course he had more dimensions than that. He was truly a loving, understanding, emotional and supportive guy and a true friend. Needless to say I loved his character. He made me see again why I love this theme so much.Even though some things were kind of predictable from the beginning, there were just as many surprises I think which were, well, a bit different and definitely unexpected but they helped the story along and I was happy to read them. The book is told from Eleanor's point of view and when I would've thought this wouldn't work for a romance novel, I realized that it did, quite well. Because we're told the story by Eleanor, we're able to see every step of her emotions and thoughts while they build up. It was a nice touch, it made the story more realistic and made me sympathize with her more easily. I also enjoyed that we got to read bits and pieces from one her erotica novels that she was struggling to write throughout the book. That was absolutely fun to read and they did add to getting into her mind frame.I liked that Julie Cohen was able to mix the serious issues with the humor and romance. I admit I did get teary eyed on a few occasions and I don't know exactly why but it was a very sweet story with great characters. I'm happy with the way things were handled and how emotions came to be and how relationships developed. This is one author I'll definitely be keeping an eye on.

Eleanor Connor is an erotica novel writer and is also working at the local bar. Her relationship with her family isn’t too bright full and she will makes sure that she doesn’t turns up like her mother. Then one night she does the very thing she always avoids, getting drunk with a gorgeous customer and have a one-night stand. When she wakes up the next morning with a huge hangover and only a few memories from the night before, she realize that they haven’t use a condom. When she finally discovers that she is pregnant, Eleanor confides her neighbour, playboy and best friend Hugh with her little problem. He promises her to help her find the father-to-be, but both of them couldn’t imagine the outcome of this whole situation. One Night Stand by Julie Cohen is a novel full of crazy humour. It’s a book where you can relate with the main character and I had that with Eleanor…not being pregnant after a one night stand, that never happened to me, but I could feel her struggle about her feeling towards her best friend Hugh. From the moment you read about Eleanor’s one-night stand and her newfound pregnancy, you’re by her side when she starts her journey to find the anonymous father. You really want her to find this guy, because he really was gorgeous, but during the book you see and feel how her best friend Hugh starts caring for her in a way you want the love of your life to feel for you. You really are hoping that Eleanor finds out his true meaning and choose him instead.I have to say this novel had me smiling quite often and I like that in a book. It was entertaining and breathe taking with some fabulous characters.

I think I am in love with Julie Cohen's writing. This is another great book of hers, which literally had me at hello!I read a lot of romance novels (you have probably realised that by now!) so the whole one-night-stand-leads-to-pregnancy theme is nothing new. However this one is a slightly different take on it, and I applaud Julie Cohen for exploring the difficult and darker side of this aspect of life.I'm sure we all know [of] someone who has been in this situation, and not knowing who, or where, the father is does happen. And that is what the heroine is going through. This whole book is written with a refreshing honesty, and a touch of brutal reality, plus there is also plenty of humour to balance it out.The characters are normal people living normal lives, but also lives that have enough secrets and forks-in-the-road to keep you interested. The love-story between the hero and heroine plays out beautifully. I knew the two of them belonged together and I was desperate for them to realise it for themselves!A wonderful book.Oh, and there is a nice little nod back to this book in Julie Cohen's latest 'The Summer of Living Dangerously', it's nice when author's do this, it makes their work feel very unique to them!Originally posted at http://everyday-is-the-same.blogspot....

Woul like to give it 4.5 really...and it only loses that as it took a while for me get into the story and characters. Good fun - totally predictable, but well written and after a slowish start gets going at a fair pace. Thought the character of June was a bit weak and stereotypical but I really enjoyed it.

i fell in love with Hugh just because he's who he's (i want to taste his chocolate cackes by the way), the only thing that made me take a star was because of the "inappropriate scenes " that i didn't enjoy reading, but this was like a book version of "friends with benefits" but a bit nicer ♡

Always enjoy Julie Cohen's work.El is both stupid & smart. I don't understand why. Hugh is ever patience with El's fickle-mindedness. Such a drama queen, i wish i could knock some senses into El's thick head

I don't know why I ever took a break from reading Little Black Dress books. Sure, they all end the same. But it's the journey that counts. And this one is one of the good ones. Julie Cohen certainly has a way with words.

I always love Julie Cohen's writing and always know I will like her books. This book was no different and a very easy read. There's always subtle witty humor in her books and the writing is always thoughtful and mature. However, there were parts in this book that were just a little too outrageous for me (without giving too much away) especially the remaining 10% of the book which started to slump for me.If you are looking for a very angsty, jealousy enraged, alpha-male type love story, that typically is not her style of writing as she writes more of a slow build of romance that more or less eludes to sex without outright explicit scenes. The quality of her stories is superb, and she tends to capture something that some writers do not (perhaps it's the great story building aspect with the British wit that British writers are so good at depicting) yet at the same time, there's something that I can't quite pinpoint that is missing sometimes in her writing. I'm beginning to think it's a bit of an air of aloofness or restraint that I wish she would let go of sometimes.

I'm assuming this was one of Julie Cohen's earlier novels. The comparison between this and titles such as "Dear Thing" are worlds apart. This was very amateur chick-lit. Every cliche under the sun packed in to 300 pages. One of those "Looking for love but it's been staring you in the face the whole time" plots - we've all read them. Many a time. This wasn't particularly well written nor very believable. The whole book felt a little flat to me.

I'll have to admit to being a little confused at times with all the British references and slang but I got through. I really liked this story. The description gave it all away so you kind of know what's coming. Meet Eleanor, she works at a bar and on the side writes erotic novels. Meet Hugh, her best friend. They met on their first day of university and ever since have been inseparable. One night upon some bad news about her current book, El decides to have a couple of drink (easy to do considering she works at a pub) something that she doesn't normally do. Next thing you know in her drunken stupor she shags a stranger and boom she's pregnant. Now back to Hugh, needless to say he's been in love with her... since the day they meet. Now back to El. Having now gotten her self pregnant and not knowing who the hell she slept with she decides she needs to find the father. Which of course she needs Hugh's help with rightt. Then begins a search for this mystery man but during it a cat and mouse tale as El realizes she also is in love with Hugh and would actually rather him be the father. During the tale you will meet some rather interesting characters , including Norman who frequents the pub and who is referred to as angry/ horny because when he gets drunk well... and June, who to be honest will piss you the hell off till the very last pageand shannon (I don't even think that's her name) the mother who also pissed me the hell off and alot more to be honest almost irrelevant characters ..?but put them aside, they really do make the book what it is, which despite them is good. I loved Hugh, his personality was inflictuous even through the pages of the book. I wanted to try every.single.one. of his desserts and if I ever get to try a chocolate cake that sounds as delicious as his, I might die. I loved the loyalty and the compassion and the what appears to be very good quality's he has in bed ;) That's another thing though, if you're looking for tons of sex, sorry. Not really the book for you. The sex is minimal and not at all explicit in details ect. Don't worry you and I both are sad about that. But yeah Hugh by far stole my heart. All in All a very good read that is recommended to all you romantics with a splash of reality (haha this will be very ironic to those of you who do read the book) out there.

I thought this was going to be unbearably trashy but it wasn't. It was a great love story between two best friends. Would recommend to romance fans.

4.5* starshardback I was lucky in getting this book for less the 1$ and I am happy for getting it.to be honest , three days ago , I wasn't encouraged to reading it but man , I am happy that I picked it up.this book is so good . light and funny and fast-paste. I really enjoyed. the characters were well developed . the plot was simple but enjoyable . I needed something like this after the last book I have encountered.what made me like it less were :Hugh , Eleanor's best friend was so nice that it was unbelievable . BTW , he is goals want to be like him or have someone like him. he was kind and supportive and helped Eleanor and stayed by her side the whole journey of her pregnancy.the Clichés , I mean ,why? "you can spot this at the last 20 pages.the Erotic parts , i mean , this book is Not for young people . how ever , I will let it pass.again , this book was a surprise for me and I really loved it .

A go-to read for me. One of my all time favorites. Eleanor is a bartender and an erotic romance writer. The only one who knows about her writing career is her best friend Hugh. One Night Stand tells the story of Eleanor's struggle with the surprises her family hands her, consequences of a one night stand, her budding career, her feeling for her best friend and to find out who she really is and what she really wants. Eleanor is a flawed, funny and at times frustrating character that I loved. Hugh is a great beta hero for Eleanor. I really liked the relationship between Eleanor and Hugh. The ending was a bit quirky and rushed but it still didn't detract from the rest of the book for me. I love British humor and this had some laugh out loud moments for me.

Rating 2.5 starsHonestly, I don't think I'll finish this one, I slogged my way to 68% read and I'm still not really interested so I think at this stage it's safe to say it's not going to happen.Which is a shame, because I adored Girl From Mars and thought I would at least like this one as well.But... meh.I think the problem might be that I didn’t really like the main character (or the supporting characters) both Eleanor and Hugh were more annoying than anything else. Also, there's a distinct lack of funny in this book, it all takes itself a bit too seriously - and considering the premise I was expecting more in the way of humour. So yeah, have given up on this one, really didn't grab me.

The main relationship in this book was very predictable, but it was a sweet story.Eleanor's relationship with members of her family cause problems in her life and make her think that she will become the same person her mother is.Eleanor is determined to be a different person than her mother and relies largely on her best friend, neighbor and playboy Hugh. With Eleanor spending more time with her best friend Hugh she starts to develop feelings that she knows are one sided. An Excellent read and the similarities that Eleanor makes between people in her life and the characters that she writes about in her adult books add to the story and show what Eleanor is subconsciously thinking.

ENFIN!!

In the beginning I was not convinced. First of all in terms of contraception, I felt like the main character’s actions fell short. (view spoiler)[She did not take the necessary post-coital measures to protect herself(hide spoiler)] and you’re just supposed to convince me that it was convincing...nah. Anyways, at some point I got hooked and could literally not put the book down. Almost walked into a swimming pool trying to read the book. All in all, I really loved the love interest. Engaging, slightly funny and interesting.

This book was hot! Not just the romance between Eleanor and Hugh, but everything else that was going on in the book too! The only thing that didn't seem quite real is how the book ended. A "happy ever after" is expected, but it just seemed too far fetched, while the rest of book was a bit more realistic. But Julie Cohen has another great book on her hands! I couldn't put it down until it was finished!

A bizarre, quirky, unexpectedly touching tale of a girl, her best friend, and a contemplated 80s pop star look-a-like contest to be held to find her baby daddy. Sometimes I just wanted to smack Eleanor, with all of her disdain for Reading and the people who populate it. That said, Hugh was dreamy, if frustratingly reticent, and the humor was dark and lovely.

What an amazing book! A very different & fresh story for a start.Kudos to Julie Cohen for writing such a marvel.Everyone would love to have a relationship like Eleanor & Hugh have. I simply loved it. This book put a stamp for me on the fact that the more I dislike the beginning of a book, the more I love it by the end! I would give it more than 5 stars, if I could!

This was a really good book. You start off wanting Eleanor to be happy with "George" and then you can see how Hugh feels about her and you want them to get together but as is usual in things like this, nothing goes smoothly. All turns out well in the end for Eleanor and Hugh but whether that is together or apart I shall leave that for you to find out :o)
