What's a girl to do when her Life Plan A hopes, dreams and aspirations doesn't work out? Switch gears, pull up her big girl panties, wear fabulous clothes and shoes, and live Life In Plan B!After unsuccessfully chasing her dream and aspiration to break into the elusive world of fashion design in New York City for two years, twenty-eight year old Haley Simpson returns to her hometown of Columbus, Ohio, to help her best friend Alex, a talented up-and-coming fashion designer who has started De Alexia, an upscale men's boutique. As the boutique's sales account representative, Haley is responsible for marketing the boutique and Alex's line of fashion designs to New York City's variety of exclusive boutiques and fashion designers. While Haley is ecstatic that Alex is living out his dream with the boutique's success, she can't help but feel like she has been riding his coattails, while her own dreams have become a forgotten thing in the past. While on a business trip to NYC, Haley hooks up with Keegan Matthews, a talented shoe designer who Alex is courting as a prospective business partner. Mixing business with pleasure leads Haley down the slippery slope of deception and lies that could affect her life-long friendship with Alex when she keeps her affair with Keegan a secret. And if that isn't enough, she meets Nick Matthews, a nice divorced guy from Columbus on the flight home, and she finds herself in a complicated romantic bind when she is attracted to the two men simultaneously! Oh and did I mention that she also has engaged in a long-held rift with her mother since her father's unexpected passing fifteen years ago?Whew ... so what's a girl to do when she alienates everyone she loves, and has so many struggles to overcome while living her Life In Plan B?In her debut novel, author Jennifer Vessells weaves an entertaining tale written in the first person narrative that follows the career, family, and romantic trials and tribulations in Haley Simpson's life. 4.5/5 stars!I reviewed this book at The Bookish BabeLife in Plan B was a really great surprise in both the story and that it is Jennifer Vessells' debut novel. Haley considers herself to be living "Life in Plan B" because her plan A life that she envisioned for herself as a designer in New York City didn't quite work out. She's since moved home to Ohio and works as an account manager for her best friend Alex who is an up and coming designer. Her work for him brings her into contact with Keegan. He's a shoe designer and gorgeous and wants to keep their relationship under wraps until he gets the contract with Alex. Perfect idea, right? As the story goes along, you can see that it is really a train wreck waiting to happen. The lies and deceitful road that she goes down is very wearing on her. It wouldn't seem so bad, but crossing business with pleasure can always end in a sticky situation if things don't work out. Her best friends Alex, Patrick and Lindsey are always there for her in every way (awesome friends) and only Lindsey knows the truth about Haley's horizontal activities. Along the way she makes a new friend in Nick, who is an amazing guy but friend zones her fairly quickly because he just went through a painful divorce. (Hmpf..I wanted them to hit it off in a bad way) When things finally hit the fan she truly finds a way to alienate every single person that she loves, and it would be very hard to be in her shoes. I am seriously struggling right now, because I really, really enjoyed this book but I am worried I will spoil it by saying too much...and at the same time feel like this is the first review I've ever written as I read through it! Sorry guys if it is painful...but really this is a fun chick lit book with a strong supporting group of characters and a girl who is just trying to find someone to be her person in life. Easy idea, very hard to actually find...and poor Haley just has the worst luck imaginable. Worst. Seriously, read it and you will see! Haley and Alex are the best of friends and I loved their dynamic and honesty (well, on Alex's part..) but how when she goes up a creek without a paddle he is awesome. In these stories it is my favorite to watch a heroine figure out how to be in love with herself before she can love someone else, and this debut hit the mark!

This book made me remember that it is the characters that make a book good, but what you do with those characters that makes a book great. I think Life in Plan B was a good example of that, in some ways.I loved the cast of characters. In fact, I liked them enough that I'd more than happily read about what happens next in their lives, should Vessells decide a sequel is in order. Protagonist Hayley resonated with me especially, because both she and I are struggling with the concept of what it means to live in your 'Plan B' life - ie; to not have achieved the dreams we had for our future selves. The stumbling block for me came when I went to describe this book to a friend, and saw that it fit the standard chick lit girl-meets-two-hot-guys-and-makes-a-series-of-foolish-decisions-before-coming-to-her-senses plot. In many ways, I don't mind this, because it's the unique characters that add a point of difference. However, if you're the kind of person who reads predominantly chick lit, it can get very predictable.Vessells did throw in a few twists that blindsided me, which was great. She also gets credit for avoiding the obvious and cliche ending that many other authors wouldn't have.I can tell I'm fence-sitting a little here. Essentially, I really liked this book, the characters, and the little details in the subplots. That said, I am sick of reading the same main storyline on repeat, and would have liked this book even more had it deviated from that norm. I suppose that's an ingrained part of the genre though, and so I can't really penalise anyone for it.So, I gave this book 4 stars; as a standalone piece of fiction, it was well-written and engaging. I just worry that it contributed to a wider problem in the chick lit genre. Maybe I should've saved those concern for a post of it's own! Honestly, I recommend you read it!

I was given this book in exchange for an honest review. This book had all my favorite things! Shoes, Clothes, secrets, hot sex, a fantastic gay couple, and did I mention shoes???This is a great story about what one does after your dream life doesn't happen. The first chapter drew me in perfectly with the comparison of life to shoes. I am a shoe fanatic and believe that shoes are a very important and personal part of a person. There are so many fun parts to this book! But the relationship between Haley and Nick and how it grew and changed over the course of the story was by far one of my favorite parts of the story. I also loved the tight friendships between Haley and her friends. It was unique to see even close relationships can have their up's and down's-but in the end that love for a friend can beat just about anything in a person's troubled life.I loved the reality of that going to New York to make it big didn't happen, but hard work and loyalty produced far better results. It is fun to see how a dynamic duo can make a boutique such a success! This book covered so many things, from friendship, to love, to how to deal with adult family member's in your life...and the disappoint that they can leave you with. I also think that as the book went along, Haley's character grew and changed and truly grew up. Which was fun to read and "watch".I believe the only thing that was a little disappointing was the very immature relationship that she developed quickly with Keegan. But I understood by the end of the book it was part of watching her grow and change. It was a relationship I would compare to a much younger person having, and for her age it seems off.I was satisfied by the end of the book that the author covered all sides to the story. It was a very well developed story and really kept my interest throughout the book.

Do you ever have a plan, a dream for your life? Most do, right? Well, what happens when it's time to swtich to plan B?That's what the heroine of this story, Haley, is dealing with. She's not living the life she imagined. So it's up to plan B. But even then, that takes a turn for the more...uhh shall we say, interesting? This is a great, easy read. It's full of elements that make up a good story. The one thing I do have to say is there's a bit overly detailed moments at times, but that's okay. Still a story that held my attention with characters that I could relate to and rooted for. Haley has a lot of changes to deal with, as always in a book such as this, and I love the way she handles things. She's someone I could spend a day with and have a blast! Life in Plan B is a great modern day story for all to sit back and enjoy. I know I did.

It was a good book about a young woman who works for her friend, but gets herself into a very messy situation, then another one...and there's more drama. The characters are all likable but I just wanted it to end after awhile. I thought Vessells could have wrapped it up a bit quicker. I also wish there could have been more depth in some of the other stories, like Alex and his parents. But as with all books in this genre, magically everything gets tied up in the end.

Worst book I have read/tried to read in a very long time . I made it to page 17, but don't think I can spend another second second hoping its banality will wane. I guess didn't read the description. Maybe the shoes or title drew me in; or all the high ratings. After reading some really great books/authors, I just can't read this. Wish I could rate it lower.

I loved this book! It had everything I like to see in a chick-lit. I really got to know the characters and could relate to them which helped me get into the book even more. And the ending was awesome!

Wonderful first book of new chick lit author Jennifer Vessells. I loved that the heart of the story was really friendship instead of love, like most chick lit books.
