BOOK REVIEW: THE PHOENIX REICH by Joshua Lisec"Where conspiracy calls, adventure awaits"' reads Joshua Lisec's tagline as an author. And he delivers. THE PHOENIX REICH is every bit as epic as the writer proclaims. The beautifully raw emotion of Max's character made me root for him from page one. After his father is murdered, Max launches into an investigation fueled by pure sorrow and rage. But as the plot moved forward, I could definitely see the makings of a true action hero; one in the same league as Indiana Jones. I laughed quite hard many times while reading their hysterical exchanges. Lisec really knows how to bring a character to life. Mix in a little spicy romance between Max and the German gal Sofia and I was sold. The flashbacks to the carnage of World War II are definite tear jerkers, with the horribly unexpected sacrificial deaths, and the finality of Max's journey coming full circle are scenes from a blockbuster movie. While the international locales, vibrant plot twists, and play-by-play action are something out of a David Baldacci or Dan Brown bestsellers. Lisec's grasp of what makes us human gave him a true voice of his own. The cliffhanger epilogue of this first novel makes me salivate for the sequel, with rumblings of a prequel, THE COMPASS, in the wings. DonnaInk Publications put together a great book that I’m sure action aficionados will enjoy. The Max Meyers Adventure Series soars to a white-knuckling 4 out of 5 stars.

Action and intrigue abound in this thrilling adventure tale written by Joshua Lisec, a bright and emerging voice in the indie book market. Young Max Meyers is a college student suddenly tossed into a situation no young man ever wants to face: finding out the truth behind the murders of his entire family. The story takes the reader on a ride through 1945 Nazi Germany, and into modern-day Virginia, as young Max sets out to disprove the FBI conclusion that his Senator father killed the boy's step-mother and step-sister before turning the gun on himself. Max knew his father well enough to suspect a cover-up in the case. He enlists a family friend, and a renegade former lawman to help him untangle the web of deceit that has been cast over the murders. Joshua Lisec tells a tight, fast-pace story filled with twists and turns that lead readers on a journey into the darker side of humanity. But the lead character brings light and truth to the tale, leaving readers eager for the second installment of this sure-to-be memorable series. I highly recommend this novel to those who appreciate a solid thrill-ride adventure story with their daily reading.

From the very first scene, the author spins a tale of mystery surrounding the death of the main character's father and who's responsible, regardless of what appears to the public as an open and shut case of murder-suicide. I found myself leaning in to the story, turning the page eagerly with each given clue. The author does a great job in some prose-like descriptions: "The blazing wisps of the flames continued to crackle, a devil's cackle of delight." But he fumbled in a few others: "Swirls of oranges, reds, and yellows churned from the windows..." But what's nice is he doesn't overdo the descriptions, and yet it's easy to picture what's going on. I particularly loved the author's easy way with conversation; it read like it would be spoken. This story kept moving from the first to last page, and it was hard to put down. I really enjoyed it.

The story opens with the unimaginable tragedy of young Max Meyers’ family. His late father, Senator William Meyers, whose name is now on a smear campaign through the nationwide tabloids, desperate to clear his father’s name, Max seeks help from his longtime family friend and professor, Charles Kensington. With the help from Kensington, they enlist private investigator James Russell, who for the right price will use any means necessary to find the truth. The trio embark on a thrilling adventure to find the truth behind the family tragedy. If you love adventure, thrills, suspense and intrigue this is the summer read for you. This is the first installment of the Max Meyer adventure saga and I can’t wait for the next installment!

I received a free copy of the first three chapters from the author in exchange for an honest review. Obviously this isn't a complete review of The Phoenix Reich, but more of a general impression after reading the first three chapters. The story's plot is very intriguing and action packed, but what concerns me is the lack of character development. They could all stand to be fleshed out, but instead the main focus here seems to flit from one event to the next with the sole goal of finishing the book quickly. I hesitate to recommend this book for purchase, so instead I would suggest checking this book out through your local library.

Danger, intrigue, family loyalty and the little everyday perils that come with being an adolescent in the modern world; it's a heady mix for a boy to deal with, but Max Meyers is not your average boy. The Phoenix Reich is a young adult novel - not a genre I'm usually drawn to, but Joshua Lisec's way with language, his determination not to talk down to his audience, and his impeccable research and understanding of World War II make this a novel not easily overlooked in a veritable sea of fodder for the burgeoning adult. Boys, your new hero has arrived!

The Phoenix Reich is a top notch YA thrill ride that the young at heart can enjoy. Josh has combined intriguing elements of the past with an up to date tale of someone forced to grow up too quick. Mystery, intrigue and discovery fuel this story. It is a great introduction to second world war (WWII) novels and conspiracy fiction for highschoolers graduating from middle grade books and looking for something more substantial that will keep them and their friends up all night. You will not be disappointed.

With characters that are well defined and fun get to know: Max, a young man still in school, his friend and somewhat guardian Kensington, a man of the cloth, and an Australian soldier of fortune The Phoenix Reich grabs you from the first page as the unlikely trio set off to disprove that Max's politician father did not murder his wife and daughter then commit suicide.Excellent start to a new series and I'm looking forward to more. Read it for the fun of it!
