Solid follow up to "Botanical Illustration Course with the Eden Project" by the same authors but techniques can be understood without studying the first book. Emphasis is on watercolor using a warm and cool primary palette for physical and optical mixes (mixed on palette vs mixed optically through glazing), controlled wet on wet techniques, and dry brush stippling, all applied in a mindful manner to achieve luminously detailed paintings that accurately convey form and color in a realist style. The book also covers use of colored pencil, graphite, and mixed media approaches for botanical illustration. Many exercises presented in the text. Prior drawing experience is a must but prior watercolor experience is not assumed nor required, although the book moves through the basics somewhat quickly. Highly recommended for illustrators and would-be illustrators looking for inspiration and instructional exercises. A nice intro to botanical illustration techniques.
